About thirty years ago the same thing happened in Mitchell, SD. Arnold "Creepy" Janssen (John Deere dealer in Emery, SD) and his son Terry were really the only two people close to the machine at the time (a 1917 Case, 7 1/2 HP), as they were driving it into a parking lot waiting for a parade to start. They were both standing on the back of the rig, and when the boiler blew, most of the steam went down through the bottom of the firebox and witnesses said it lifted the machine 30-40 feet into the air. The pressure did blow off the firebox door, which, although it injured both Creep and Terry seriously when it hit them, it probably saved their lives because it pushed them off the back of the machine. Creep had terrible injuries to both legs, and eventually lost one of them due to the accident. Terry was hit in the head with the firebox door, and was in touch-and-go shape for quite a few weeks. My dad was just driving up to see them, and got there about a minute after the explosion. One stoplight less, and I might have lost him.
