There is a slight problem with the rear of the NH 456 mower. It is heavy. The jack on mine is no longer even on the mower. It caught alot of abuse in its location and was taken off becuase it was no longer functional. I resolved the problem with the weight by simply putting the bar down and then lowering it before unhooking the mower. This takes most of the weight off the rear of mower making it capable of being hooked up much easier. It takes me about 2 minutes to hook it up. At the end of the 2 minutes I am ussually greasing. Sometimes I grease u joints in pto before pto hook up. U joint greasing is included in 2 minute hook up time. Does your IHC mower pivate when turning? Or is it solid with tractor? If it don't pivate your guards tend to slide crossways cuasing cutting problems when you are in a sharp turn. Also if you bump the steering wheel your bar jerks about 4 inches one way or the other. With a trail mower you don't have this effect at all. Your guards are always going straight into your cutting path even when in a turn. You also don't have the jerkyness when doing minor turning of wheel. NH 456 mowers had a 1 way cylinder with a spring that aided in lowering of bar. I put a 2 way cylinder on mine and the bar goes up and down like the snap of your finger. No more gradual lowering of bar. This helped alot getting unclogged. Even if hay hangs up on bar you can raise and immediately lower a couple times and the hay will bounce right off of there. The one way cylinder wouldn't do this as smoothly. I ussually mow with a 235 massey ferguson and it has ground driven pto as well as live. If you hit wire grass and your bar stops and your belt slips you just raise bar, put pto in ground drive, transmission in reverse, and back up and your mower will run backward getting itself unstuck. I can mow all day generally without getting off tractor to screw with mower, unclogging and getting it unstuck. Of coarse the features that I have added to mower and the ones on the tractor make running this mower much better. The only time I have to get off is when I get mud in the guards that won't allow cutting cuasing clog ups and uncut grass. I work for some people that run nothing but JD. They got a 4230 and a 9ft JD 3 point mower and I wouldn't take this mower if you gave it to me. Well I might haul it to srap yard and sell it. I have never run a mounted mower, even the 3 point ones, that I liked better than the trail style. The main biggy for the trail style is you have to watch and drive accordingly while backing up. It takes a little getting use to becuase they are a little touchy about pulling one way or the other while backing. That is pretty mild compared with the headaches a mounted or 3 point mower can cause. Other little minor details can be improved on a trail mower simular to the things I mentioned above. You just have to use your head a little. Course in this world when don't you have to use your head a little? And I am not some punk that has only run trail mowers. I grew up mowing with a JD # 7 (or maybe it was a 9, I don't really remember the model) pitman mower and that was quite the experience. I got really good at running it but I wouldn't go back to those days for nothing. The 3 point mowers are only partially improved form these old relicks and the trail mower was even a bigger improvement I think. I have cut all types of hay and run all three types of mowers and I would take the trail style any day.
