The timing cover does need to come off, to do this remove governor first. The crankshaft and main bearings are pulled as an assembly from the rear. The flywheel has to come off first. The flywheel and crankshaft assembly are removed with stout pullers. Get a service manual from Rice Equipment. I pulled the crankshaft and mains from a 22-36 years ago - you need the special pullers to do the job right.
