Barry it is pretty straight forward. With the valve cover removed, the valve closest to the radiator is the exhaust. Once it opens and closes, the intake valve will follow immediately thereafter. Then slowly turn the engine until the first notch on the flywheel lines up with the timing mark. That piston is now on TDC compression stroke. I set the clearances at .018 with the engine cold. You will need a screwdriver and a half inch open end or box wrench. When you thighten the locking nut, hold the adjusting screw with your screwdriver to maintain the clearance. The second cylinder is intake, exhaust. Third is exhaust and intake. Fourth is intake exhaust. Repeat the same procedure on the other 3 cylinders. If the missing doesn't go away, I would suspect your 2 advance springs in the distributor are weak and not advancing the timing enough when you speed the engine up.
