M Farmalls were originaly positive ground which is the way you are describing your set up. Is it a 6 volt battery as well? The generator may have a voltage regulater or a cut out. It takes a little understanding of how these work to check them out but if they aren't working, your battery won't be charged by tractor. If you unhook everything make sure your generator is polarized the right way when you hook all the wires back up. It could also be that your generator is not putting out any juice. I would advise you to take the time and learn how this system works and figure out what the problem actually is before throwing up your hands and doing something different. These positive ground 6 volt systems, with in some cases a cut out, were on the week side as far as having a lot of juice and were to confusing for some people to figure out when they went caput. Alot of these H's and M's have been converted to negative ground system with a 12 volt battery. Alot of these convertions have been done by people who didn't even understand the original system and thier convertion is all messed up. I think if people understand the original system there would be alot less confusion for them all the way around. From current sytem, to trouble shooting, clear on into a conversion set up. That is why I advise people to take the time and understand and learn the system. Please post any additional questions and I am sure some of the guys will help you out.
