The firing order is indeed 1, 3, 4, 2. #1 on the engine is the one nearest the radiator. then 2, 3, and 4 follow. On the distributor, #1 plug wire should go in the hole that is at about 2 o'clock position. The next one (in a clockwise sequence) would go to #3. The next goes to #4 and the last obviously to #2. Don't feel bad, I had to learn this the hard way. As for the timing issue, the spark should occur on the first notch of the crankshaft fan drive pulley at low idle (or hand cranking (essentially 0-400 RPM)). I can't remember specifically where it is, but there is a nut that has to be loosened to allow the ditributor to be rotated for proper timing. If I remember right, advance should be about 16 degrees at full RPM (The second timing mark on the pulley.
