Distillate is a composite. It is everything in the crude oil that isn't gasoline, kerosene, diesel, and fuel oil. In the old days, crude oil was run through a long heated tower to boil off the volatile elements. (Lower temps produce the more volatile fuels.) The vapors at only certain temperatures were condensed and collected for the different fuels. The vapors that boiled off in between these temps were condensed and sent into the "distillate" tank. This distillate tank collected everything in between the boiling points of the common fuels. This "blend" of materials was different for the different types of crude (light to heavy). It was considered waste and that is why it was so cheap. Anyone that really used distillate did so out of necessity and learned to hate it. Old timers say it stunk and could really crud up an engine. I believed it when I removed the head and manifold off of an old Farmall H that had been run on distillate for years. The exhaust passages were almost closed off with hard black carbon because of the low-volatile portion of the distillate that didn't properly burn. It could not be salvaged (sigh). That said, you can't buy the distillate of long ago. Crude is now "cracked" so there is no distillate waste. You can only roughly approximate it by blending fuels available today.

If i said that this was a little frustrating for him that would be "conservative" in fact the problem had reduce
