You are right about distillate tractors being around before WW II. It was during the war however that thousands of tractors were produced for the war effort to feed our allies in europe. This was in a time when a citizen couldn't buy tires or was rationed for how much gasoline one could buy. Farmers could get tractors and gasoline but distillates were cheaper and more plentiful than gasoline fuel. I'm just a Farmall guy and I can't speak for other breeds of tractors but you will note that farmalls set up for distillates began to disappear after the war ...I am not sure of all the production runs but the H's in '53 and '54 didn't have tha auxillary tank and when you scrounge the wreckers you'll find hoods without the hole for the auxillary tank. Gasolines were more plentiful after the war. Lets face it, gasoline was delivered in 5 gallon fuel cans and farmers might get two or three cans delivered at a time. We had a 45 gallon drum that served as a fuel tank.Compare that with 1000 gallon storage tanks farmers use today
