If you are going to stay with a generator here's what you will have to change:
- Generator (or have existing 6 volt gen rewound for 12 volts)
- Regulator
- Ignition coil (or install a ballast resistor in series with the existing coil)
- All lamps
- Battery

Things you can leave as is:
- Starter
- Ammeter
- Switches (ignition, starter and lighting)
- Wiring/cables (unless they are worn out and need replacing anyway)

If you are converting to an alternator, you will need to do some (minor) rewiring, reverse the battery ground and ammeter connections, and cob up a suitable bracket to mount the alternator - kinda tough on an H on account of limited space, but possible. Punch below for more detail...
