My Dad cultivated hundreds of acres of corn, beans, tomatoes and peppers with only the front gangs. He used to call the rear gangs "ditch diggers" and promtly removed them. We always had good weed control. The key was to cultivate as soon as the weeds began to sprout and before the roots on the weeds developed too much. The bigger the weeds are the deeper you will have to run the cultivator to knock the weeds out. And the deeper you run culitvator the more weed seed you will bring to the surface to sprout again. Deep cultivation will also increase water evaporation from the soil.
