Unles you're running on kerosene, make sure you show oil at the bottom one, and make sure you don't at the top one. Burning gasoline and working them hard, I never open the top one. If oil fails to drip on the bottom petcock, I add a quart, or more until the bottom shows oil. Even the oil burners rarely use more than a quart in four hours. When I change oil I usually pump it in out of a 5 gallon pail, so I open the bottom petcock and quit when I see oil. There is enough running down through the engine to put the level between the petcocks. There is no advantage to filling to the top petcock. I don't believe an M needs full oil level to assist cooling like some automobile engines. As long as the level is far enough above the oil pump intake to avoid sucking bubbles or air into the pump engine life is not compromised. And they can run 3 quarts low with no loss of oil pressure (experience). But I always check the oil before intentionally getting on a steep slope like a trailer ramp. I got hung up momentarialy on a steep terrace the other day with the tractor at a very steep angle (front down). Watching the oil pressure gauge was the least of my worries but I did and it never quivered. The tractor was about 1-1/2 qt low at the time. Of course a diesel with a bad seal in the injector pump will make oil and must be watched to make sure it doesn't get too thin.
