Hello Mark, I know what your talking about, dads 544 uses the same shift setup. I made a new shifter shaft and built up some worn areas so that most of the shifting woes were curred back in Dec or Jan. The Quick fix that will help is to remove the casting that holds down the springs on top of the trany and put a short 1/4 bolt with the threaded portion in the spring and the head against the ball so it is under more preasure. Also make a bigger hole in the shaft that runs through the links so that the ball bearing can make nuteral more evident. Get a over length die makers dowl pin and grind to length as it will bear on unworn metal and remove a lot of slop. The factory pin is to short and wears to fast.
