You said that you hooked up wire from magnito to switch and then hooked up ground to the other side of switch and the switch wouldn't kill the engine. Try jumping the wire straight to a ground bypassing the switch. If it kills the engine then you need a new switch. If the switch quit working, someone probably disconnected it and maybe had a temparary fix on it that is no longer there. Otherwise you are working with a wrong wire or something.
