hit and miss

I have a friend looking for information on IH hit and miss engines. He recently picked up a IH model M Kero/gas engine. he has some paper work he would like to know the age and anything else about this engine. the serial number is not listed in his manuals. It is A18357M all of his paper work shows no "A" engine only "AX" does he have a rare one or just something not listed in his books? any other information on this would be helpful.
