H WONT STAY IN FIFTH GEAR

MY 42 H WILL COME OUT OF FIFTH GEAR AFTER TRAVELING ABOUT 1/4 OF A MILE.I CAN HOLD IT IN GEAR WITH MY FOOT COCKED BETWEEN THE STEERING COLUMN AND THE SHIFT LEVER,BUT THIS POSITION WORKS ON THE OLD ATHRITUS AFTER A WHILE.IT DOESENT FIGHT TO POP OUT WHILE I AM HOLDING IT. DO YOUALL THINK THE SHIFT LEVER COULD BE WORN ON THE BOTTOM END ENOUGH THAT IT WOULD NOT BE SLIDING THE FORK IN THE PROPER POSITION? ALL THE OTHER GEARS ARE OK.ANY HELP OR COMMENTS WILL BE APPRECIATED. ED
