Nice post Dick. Here is a copy of my post on the JD Discussion Board dated 10 Nov 00. Anyone can test this out if they have a Multimeter. My opinion, born out by doing it, is save your money, and use the original 6V gen with a 12V reg.
Of course, there will always be those who will disagree.
On my 49 B, all I did was put on a 12V regulator. The 6V generator handles it just fine. Before I did this I did the following test. I grounded the F terminal of the generator momentarily while a voltmeter was connected between the A terminal and ground. The generator put out 31 Volts! Someone a long time ago (probably an old engineer from Indiana) had suggested that the 6V gen would put out 12 volts, and by golly he was right! Had to do the old test and verify it myself, though. As far as the magneto, it's a separate system, and will be fine as it is. I kept my B + ground, just to avoid any unnecessary confusion. Will using a 12V reg affect the long term life of the 6V gen? Beats me.
