Several books I have give this info in detail. The fuel was much less expensive that gasoline. The down side of the heavier distillates is that they didn't have the octane to support higher compression ratios, or as much heat energy, and they vaporized poorly. Engines had to use lower compression which killed efficiency, and they had to run hotter to vaporize the fuel, and even then some raw fuel ended up in the crankcase and diluted the engine oil. The engines wouldn't start on distillate or kerosene by themselves. A sep. tank was required to feed the engine gasoline for starting. With the high gas prices, $1.50/gal for reg. no-lead, Kerosene does NOT look like a good deal at $2.60/ gal for My heater in the winter!
