These tractors are fairly simple to time, first crank the engine by hand with your finger over the #1 cylinder hole (plug out)when you feel compression keep cranking until pointer on engine block lines up with mark on pully wheel. This is TDC. At this point the mag may or not have made a click noise (impulse trip). If it hasn't clicked yet your retarded and you can turn the mag until it does. If it has tripped then your advanced, so turn mag to retard timing (remember firing order is 1342 so rotate mag accordingly). Then crank engine by hand again and adjust mag until the impluse trips when pointer points to notch in wheel. Some wheels have alot of notches, on mine its the second notch of the 2 close together. It helps if you put some white paint on the notch. The last thing is, if you cant turn the mag enough so that impluse trips at TDC then move the rotor gear one tooth forward/back until it does. Hope this helps. Maybe someone else could explain it better or add to this. Remember to set mag points to.018" gap.Good luck.
