Around the end of May this year I was rotary mowing with my 504 diesel. The engine was running very well, about 1600 rpm under very little load. All at once a noise like shattering glass came from the engine block and the tractor started missing. I immediatly killed it and sat on the seat in disbelief and confusion as to what had just happened. Had my Dad come pull me to my shop with his 886 and pulled the engine apart. The number one cylinder sleeve was shattered in the oil pan. The block did not appeat to be damaged and checked out ok as far as cylinder diameter specs go. I bought new pistons, rings, sleeves, wrist pins and bearings and put the engine back together with all new gaskets. What caused this failure? The tractor gets "kid glove" treatment and is never overloaded and 1600 actual hours is correct.
