Progress On Old Smokey M

I was at the farm Saturday through this morning. It was perfect weather to get in some wrenching time on Old Smokey M. I replaced the 4 1/2" diameter oil filter assembly with the long skinny base and can from Old Rusty H. I lashed the valves which were not too far off. The exhaust valve clearances were around .025 and the intakes were around .010. I wonder if someone had the wrong clearances last time around. As much dirt as was on the valve cover, it had not been off at least 20 years. It was very clean underneath and I lashed them at .019 cold. I couldn't find my .018 feeler gauge.

I stuck in new spark plugs, plug wires and distributor cap. It was still cranking close to 10 revolutions before it would start. I check the points. To my amazement they were sparking with only .005 clearance! The surfaces were in bad shape. After raplacing the points, Old Smokey is now starting on the second revolution.

I still have to mount the new electrical harnesses, the bull cage seals and the new brake bands. I also replaced the water temperature gauge. The new one only moved to the "O" in cold so I am betting the thermostat is missing. Since the new coolant already looks grungy, I'll drain the whole system and pour in fresh when I install the thermostat.

Smoking is down to a minimum now that the engine is tuned. Pulling 25,000 pounds of hoppers this fall will be a good test on the engine. I will have to rebuild the carburetor. It will not idle below 1,000 RPM without starving to death. Apparently the idle jet is pretty much plugged.

I at least got a good start on bringing a retired M back to life. The transmission and clutch are solid on this one. The front bolster will eventually have to be rebuilt. However it doesn't wiggle as much as Old Red H!!

Today's Featured Article - An AC Model M Crawler - by Anthony West. Neil Atkins is a man in his late thirties, a mild and patient character who talks fondly of his farming heritage. He farms around a hundred and fifty acres of arable land, in a village called Southam, located just outside Leamington Spa in Warwickshire. The soil is a rich dark brown and is well looked after. unlike some areas in the midlands it is also fairly flat, broken only by hedgerows and the occasional valley and brook. A copse of wildbreaking silver birch and oak trees surround the top si ... [Read Article]
