My Hesston Super 6 leaks gear oil real bad if I just put in gear oil. I usually put in a bunch of grease from the grease gun and then gear oil in with that. Sometimes I put in some motor oil as a kind of cleaning agent if it seems like the grease has gotten too thick. I figure its too thick if its starting to cake onto the gears that I can see through the oil add port. At that point I'll fairly fill to the top with 10-30 or 5-30, whatever is on hand, it takes about two quarts. After a couple hours of running that light oil will have mostly run out and I'll add more grease and heavy oil. The mower doesn't get used too much, but after 2 hours of mowing the gearbox isn't so hot that you can't touch it. I wouldn't leave my hand there long but I can touch it.
