PTO retrofit for '48 Farmall Cub

I bought a used PTO for my Cub and went out to install it. The rear plate and spline would slide into place, no problem.
Surprise, surprise! There's no hole for the shifter. With all of the unused bolt holes all over this beast I didn't even check to see if it had all of the holes necessary. Apparently you only get the hole if it comes with PTO stock.
Am I missing something?
Does anyone have any hints on adding this hole?
How critical is the placement? -/+ 1/8"?
Are there any other suprises ahead?
