J3nut: There are about only two ways that I've run across. Electronic devices such as used on autos. The other is a mechanical gauge that you would apply\hold against the PTO or belt pully and it would show RPM on the face dial. ((Older versions would show number of turns per a given unit of time such as one minute)) These would indicate factory engine speed ..IF.. you are at rated PTO speed of 540 etc you would need tractor specks to determine RPM's. I'am sure there could be other ways to improvise a method such as using a strobe light thats calibrated to a known frequency similar to engine speed but this is too far out. ralph ((by the way, is J3 in your handle refer to a Piper J3??))
