Dick - There's an explanation somewhere in the archives but I'll be d*mned if I can find it again. So here's the short version once again... The VR consists of 2 relays: The cutout relay and the regulator relay. The cutout is a normally open, voltage sensitive, reverse current relay. It's contacts are between the generator armature and the ungrounded battery terminal. It's purpose is to connect the generator to the battery anytime the generator output voltage is higher than the relay's cut-in setting - about 7.5 volts for a 6 volt system, and disconnect it whenever generator voltage falls back below about 6.0 volts The regulator relay is a normally closed, voltage sensitive relay. It's contacts connect the generator field terminal to ground. It's coil senses system voltage. When the regulator senses system voltage above it's regulating setting (about 7.5 volts) it's contacts open. This interrupts the generator field current which in turn causes the generator output voltage to drop. The regulator senses this drop and the contacts close again. This causes the generator voltage to rise. This cycle repeats very rapidly (typically 20+ times a second) resulting in a constant generator ouput of about 7.5 volts. This is the basic explanation. There's more details like a reverse current winding on the cutout coil, a field current resistor in the regulator circuit, etc. but I'm gonna leave this for someone else to explain. ...Bob M
