Nyles, In using the term "precleaner", you answered your own question, if you notice the configuration of angled fins on the air intake opposite of the glass jar- this is to give the incomming air a swirling effect, which throws the dirt particals to the outside, where they gather in the "jar". The "pre-cleaned" air is then drawn down through the oil soaked screens in the body of the air cleaner, to remove more of the dirt etc, before entering the carburator. An indication of how dirty the air can be is found in the bottom of the oil reservoir at the bottom of the air cleaner. The care in maintaining this simple but effective unit will decide just how long the motor will last. Hope my babbling is of some use, have a gooder, R.E.L.
