Do a compression check to see if the problem is the compression in one or more cylinders. Remove the plug wires one at a time to see which cylinders aren't firing or aren't firing correctly. Like Red said, swap plug wires to see if they are the problem. Replace the cap and rotor on the mag. Replace all the plugs with at least two heat ranges hotter plugs. Check to see if one or more valves are sticking or for bent pushrods. Check and reset the valve clearances. Finally, if none of these things help, pull the head and have a machine shop check it for cracks, especially in the combustion chamber areas. If overheated, these engines are subject to that type of failure, BTDT.
