6 volt Delco generator change to 12V

Have any of you ever tried to change a 6 volt generator over by using a similar 12 volt regulator and 12 volt battery? I have never herd of it being tried. but am very tempted to do it. Seems it would sense the input voltage to the Field and produce what is required. What are your thoughts. System generator is a Delco with Armature, Field & ground terminals. The regulator that I have looks almost identical in function except it was designed for 12 Volt pos. or neg. applications. Regulator is an Echlin VR 122 unit. I can't tell you its Delco equivalent. But I suspect it is left over from my days in the auto shop, Most likely was used on a 57 or so Chevrolet. Your thoughts would be appreciated.
