Start with basics, First make sure your start switch is in the on position, as you know you can crank the engine with the switch on or off.

Check for spark, disconnect coil wire from distributor cap,and ground it to the block and crank the engine, you should have a spark jumping from the coil wire to ground. If you have this,it indicates that your points are receiving power and are opening and closing.

If you don't have spark, Insure the points are first gapped correctly and are opening and closing ,not welded together. Assuming the points are ok you will have to work backwards to a source of power from the distributor to the start switch.

If you have spark, than check to insure fuel is getting to the carb, take off the carb air intake, pull the choke and crank the engine, fuel should start dripping out of the carb, this will tell you it's at least getting into the carb.

If carb is the problem you can by pass it by pulling the plugs, make sure they are dry and squirt a little fuel in the cylinders, replace the plugs and crank it over again, If it starts up it will only run until the fuel above the pistons is used up.
