F-14 rear rubber

I was fortunate enough to be able to buy a set of rear star shaped hubs with the rims for my 14.The rims were about shot but possibly could be fixed up.Well instead I found a set of 40 inch blank rims which i was assured of they would work but the section where the clamps grab is bigger by 2.5 inches.Was still assured by the guy I got them from it would work but would have to flip around the clamps until I found the right combo that will work.Anybody ever done this before or will I end up doing something else.I fooled with it a littlethis morning but Im starting to wonder if they will work.Any thoughts
