If your generator is working correctly your tractor should run even on a dead battery. I was driving a tractor one time and the battery fell out while driving and I drove it home without battery (and yes it had a distributor). A generator will charge a battery even if it is completely dead. The problem is you shouldn't be able to start tractor with completely dead battery unless you have a mag and crank it. An ammeter should operate if your battery is receiving a charge or discharge otherwise the neddle should remain centered no matter what the battery charge is. The cutting out problem would only be related to charging problem if the current to the coil is affected. If the coil is recieving attequate current(which isn't much), then it is two different problems.
