Any problems with NOS head gaskets?

I have a Farmall AV and super A. I put new old stock IH gaskets on them. Both engines have been totally rebuild at a machine shop, head, block ect. I supplied the sleeve kits, gaskets, valves basically all the parts. Now the AV spits water out the exhaust when I first start it and the Super A leaks water out the side right where the head meets the block. I retorqe them but they still leak. Could this old stock IH gasket have dried out or lost some of its seal abilitiy? Are there better gaskets out there? When the gaskets were installed the machine shop put some silver stuff on the outside of the gasket to help seal it. They were cheap at the time and I figured if they worked then why not now. I think they are leaking between the 2 metal sides in the middle through the fiberous material. Any Ideas?
