I have been there too. The old wire is embedded in dirt and set up like concrete. I tapped mine lightly with a hammer after I removed the bar from the tractor. Don't hit hard or you will dent the bar. After a couple hours of tapping and pulling the wire came out along with ancient mud dauber nests. After that it was easy to install the new wire (after cleaning and painting the bar and tractor}.
