Stan: You do not have a short, if you had a short you would know it by the burned wire insulation and the smoke. With a bad ground anything is possible. You haven't said if you are using a 6 or 12V system, but in either case all grounds should be clean and tight, a 12V system will just generate more smoke. You haven't said weather or not all light are burning with equal brightness. If one light is dimmer than the others, start your troubleshooting with that light. Your light bulbe gets it's ground inside the light housing and the light housing is grounded to the tractor chassis through the mounting bars. When you open the bulb housing you will see a wire riveted to the housing and soldered to the bulb receptacle, make sure that this wire is making a good ground. At this point you can take a piece of # 16 or larger wire and with the lights on see if there is any change when you place the wire ends to a good ground (ground side of the battery is recommended)and to the light bulb ground. You may have to dismantle the lights and light mounting's, cleaning each till a good ground is made. I will also suggest that you clean all positive voltage connections in the light system as you go along. I hope this helps.
