12 volt starting

My H was converted to 12v by the previous owner. It works fine, that is to say it starts right up, but when I hit the starter button it sounds too aggressive. I wouldn't mind having to one day change the bendix, but a ring gear is another thing. Is there a way to moderate the starter's initial impulse? Or am I the one who's over-reacting?
