Charging system problem solved!!

For some time, I've been keeping the batteries charged on my MD with a small trickle charger. Of course it uses no electricity when running and I've found the two 6 volt batteries in series(it's a stock 12 volt system) will hold enough power for a lot of starts before I had to recharge. I had the generator rebuilt and an new regulator about a year ago, and they worked for a while. Today, I decided to dig into it to solve the problem. Found that the generator would charge when I grounded the field terminal. Measured the voltage with the field grounded and got over 16 volts. Also measured the resistance to a good ground from the base of the regulator and got about 5 to 6 ohms which I thought would be low enough and thus I figured the regulator was bad. Did not think to run a wire from the regulator base to a ground before I took the regulator off and to a shop to have it checked. They said the regulator checked good!! So back home, reinstall it and run a wire from under the base mounting lug to a good ground on the tractor. Problem solved!! I'm getting 25 amps or so and over 15 volts at the generator. The regulator is mounted on the radiator bracket and apparently, the painting I did a while back (with the regulator removed) and maybe paint under radiator attachements too kept the regulator from getting a good enough ground to make the generator work. Just thought I'd pass along the info.
