M&W, Heisler and probably other manufacturers made overdrives for tractors starting in the 40's. These were additional gears installed in the transmission that permitted increased speed in each existing gear except 5th or road gear. It also sped up the PTO. The gears were engaged by the clutch and a lever or pull cable. The new speeds [high 1,2,3&4] were faster than existing 4th. Very useful in pulling loads on the highway or highspeed cultivation like rotary hoe or harrowing. You can find them in some salvage yards or advertise in the classifieds.
