Need help - adjusting Cub voltage regulator

I would appreciate someone e-mailing or referring me to the procedure for adjusting a Delco Remy VR. Don't know the model number. It is positive ground, 6V system. I have an IH service manual, but all it has is a table showing voltage settings and air gaps for the cut out relay and the voltage regulator relay. One problem is I don't know exactly what the VR relay or cut out relay is supposed to do. I don't want to start changing things without understanding how the VR is supposed to work. When I run the tractor, the ammeter shows discharge. After I polarize (or re-polarize) the generator, it charges for a short time and either stops charging or shows discharge (with no electrical load) Thanks in advance....Jim
