A helicoil is for stripped out or bad threads. You have to buy a kit for each particular size but then you drill out the old threads, tap in new threads a bit larger and install a "helicoil" which gives you new threads of the original size.

This is a great option because you can maintain the original stud size. If done with care it is little or no compromise over the original. Just make sure you get helicoils that are the proper length for the application.
