Sounds like a C21 or C21M. If it has the wooden pitman, that will be it. It was factory built in 5-6-7 foot bars. The left bracket was set to the inside and the right to the outside so that the inner shoe would clear the right wheel. My grandfather ran one. I'm guessin he might have had the experience of cracking the axle housing as he was always REAL fussy about checking the tension/fit of the bracket to the axle when he'd put the mower on. Could only speculate about whether the problem would more likely be over-torquing the bracket or having it too loose so that it had the chance to put a fatal torque on the housing.
