Jim if you want to go the alternator route, punch below for Bob Melville's super wiring diagram. He uses a Delco 10sI alternator.

You can still use the 6 volt coil. All you need is a ballast resistor in the coil line prior to the coil. NAPA part 13 ICR. I mount them up on the steering center support bracket next to where the oil line bolts to the bracket.
