The engine ser.# on the engine was the same as the tractor ser.#, but that doesn't mean things weren't changed in the last 50 years....The engine ser.# is above #1 sparkplug. Casting dates will tell you when they were cast. Check several to make sure they are all from the same time period. These can be changed from tractor to tractor too.... A casting code would look like this..... *3*16*J* March 16, 1940, K is 41 and so on. U & W was used in 1951, and V was not used. They started over in 1955 with the letter A. The asterisks in above date would appear as a flat head screw.
