Scott, Backlash can be measured in a number of ways either with feeler guages or with dial indicator. Backlash is basically the amount of play between bevel gear and pinion before any actual motion takes place on the shaft.Red lead or prussian blue applied to the bevel will indicate what amount contact you have between the gears.Hope this helps. scotty
