300 PTO

I recently purchased a 300 Farmall rowcrop with live PTO. It makes a whinning noise when its disengaged, the noise seems to come from the transmisson/rear end. Makes no noise and runs smooth when the lever is back and the PTO running. Does anyone know what the problem is or where to start looking. Thanks.
