Not endorsing either route, just noting parts of the equation that you may or may not have in mind for the head job, and he may or may not have the equipment for.
As far as costs, if you ballpark $200 in labor with potentially double that in parts (or very little if the guides aren't shot and the valves are good enough to grind), you can weigh your options.
