Fiction for sure! Consider this: Valves burn when they get too hot. Mufflers increase backpressure. Simple physics says increasing the exhaust pressure increases exhaust temperature (for you engineers recall PV=nRT where V, n and R are assumed constant...). Therefore you are theoretically more likely to burn valves WITH a muffler installed. My experience with a Chrysler 8 cylinder gas powered irrigation pump with dual exhaust stacks years ago bears this out. At night we noticed when one muffler blew off, the manifold on that side lit a duller red....indicating a cooler exhaust.
