Jeff, I have a 1948 H Farmall with the M&W clutch and the adjustment for the hand clutch is to tighten(clockwise) the castle nut. If this nut is backed off as you have indicated, Yes, it will slip! It sounds to me that you need to take your clutch apart far enough to get to the pressure plate that the clutches work on and clean the plates and ballberings that it works on. That will let your hand clutch work as it is susposed to. It should snap over center with a reasonable amount of pressure or it will slip.
