ask anyone who races a dirt bike if it will run faster with or without a muffler (yes even the four cycle engines). heat alone does not burn valves. no valves are perfect, they don't always close air tight, so when the engine is running, the exhaust valve is sucking some gasses back thru the exhaust. if the exhaust is short, it will get air, oxygen back on the super hot surface of the exhaust and seat and rapidly burn the metal.yes the early farmalls had straight exhausts elbow stack from the factory.the oliver hart parr 70, oliver 70 (roman nose) and fleet line series had their muffler under the hood
