Like Bob(PA) says, don't worry about the nut behind. It fits in a slot to keep it from turning. You tighten up the fan assembly on the front side of the support. There is a hex on the fan pulley shaft just behind the pulleys for a wrench. Just pry up from the back side and tighten up from the front. The belt should not have to be very tight to work properly. If it is still slipping and squealing and reasonably tight, I think you may have other problems. As Neal says, make sure you have oil in the fan hub.
