Kerosine because it is less volatile that gas and therefore less of a fire hazard. Also since it is less volatile, you are less likely to breath in the vapors. The kerosine may also contain toxic chemicals, but not as likely to as gasoline. The degreaser products have worked good for me, especially with a pressure washer but nothing is going to easily take off a heavy coat of dirt and grease that took years to accumulate. Benzene and related chemicals are toxic chemicals just because that's the way things are. When the lead was taken out of gasoline, something had to be changed to help keep the octane rating up, which was previously accomplished with lead additives. One of the changes was to put in a lot more aromatic organic compounds (benzene and derivatives) which burn slower but are still volatile and keep the octane rating up.
