I owned a 656 for many years and I think you fellows have missed the real problem of John L. & friend. I am very aware of the problems you can encounter with improper clutch and torque amplifier adjustments. There is three linkages come from the gear selector lever shaft. They go behind the battery to the transmission. These linkages are from left to right; 1st and reverse, 2nd and 3rd, 4th and 5th. The shaft has a pin aprox. 5/16" and when centered in shaft, protrudes 1/4 " each way. As you slide the selector lever through the neutral position the pin in the shaft alines with various linkages. Three things can this pin. 1. It can come loose and fall out. 2. It can come part way out, thus the shaft will not slide. 3. The ends wear on this pin and when worn enough may for example not bring the tractor out 3rd gear but shifter lever will put it in 4th. You probably need a new pin and possibly a gear selector shaft as hole in shaft is likely worn. I had to replace both. Having said all of this I will say that improper adjustment of clutch and torque amplifier have caused this. It causes tractor to shift hard thus excessive wear on linkage.

Since this can be extremely difficult, you may want to fabricate the item or purchase a modern replacement temporarily, but eventually, you s
